Chapter 26: Runaway Bride

Ressner

First Methodist Church of Ressner

I still had an invitation to the Epstein function. Even though I told Lori Banter that I wasn’t going to attend the wedding of Felicia Davis and Walter Epstein, I decided to go, taking my camera as if it were a child. I dragged it everywhere and never left t it unattended. Frankly, I knew that Patrick was going to be at the wedding ceremony and reception, working. I wanted nothing more than to see him.

The wedding ceremony was being held at the First Methodist Church of Ressner, which was southwest of Templeton. The reception was going to take place at The Palace, an expensive and uppity establishment in Bower Township, just a few miles from the church.

The church was decorated with white roses and satin ribbons of the same hue. Rose petals garnished the center aisle, and candles in faux silver candelabras lined the walls. The groom stood at the head of the church, on the right side. Walter Randolph Epstein was dressed in a black and white tux from a local designer named Steven de Sola. The tux was hand sewn, an original, and quite the amount of money, but not as steep in price as the bride’s gown, which I had learned while eavesdropping on one of the guests seated by me.

To the groom’s left stood the man I thought I was falling in love with, Patrick Brogan. The hired groomsman was also dressed in black and white and showcased a white rose on his lapel. He was groomed to perfection, looked quite dapper, and edible, which I had no intention of mentioning to those around me. We made eye contact. He winked, nodded, and smiled at me. I gave him a little wave that was discreet, smiled in return, happy to see him. I knew that we were going to have a great evening together at the reception, just as we had at the Thrower wedding.

Rumor had it that the bride, Felicia Meredith Davis, was going to wear an A-line dress with spaghetti straps, a beaded bodice, and princess seams.. The fabric was chiffon and imported from France, costing the father of bride, Daniel Logan Davis, a bloody fortune, well into the thousands. The dress was going to make the tiny bride look taller. And because Felicia had large bust lines, she had chosen an open neckline.

The bridesmaids, seven in all, were of different heights, weights, and hair colors. Each was dressed in a knee length, leg-baring, silk-faille dress in a light violet hue. And although I wasn’t a fan because they would obviously take the glamor and glitter away from the bride, each wore Donna de Koning earrings and Dana Rebecca Designs bracelets.

Chatter circulated about the church guests and the reception. The décor was comprised of expensive wines (complimentary gifts for the guests because they were attending the function), sugar grape clusters, and purple roses. A local chef named Calgary Bain was serving minted fennel salad, Persian lamb, roast duck with apple, and piquant fish cakes.
